Acquiring a New BNL Domain Account¶
Steps to acquiring a domain account with BNL. Processing of each step may take some time, so plan ahead.
Expected lead time for BNL guest appointments for non-US citizens
| Country category | Lead time before anticipated start date |
|---|---|
| Non-sensitive country | 7 working days |
| Sensitive country | 30 calendar days |
| State Sponsor of Terrorism (SST) country | 90 calendar days |
1. Request a BNL Guest Appointment¶
Request a BNL guest appointment through the Guest Information System.
This step takes about a week (but see the lead times above). Please fill out the form using the suggestions below and your best knowledge.
Contact Cia Falak (cfaltzala@bnl.gov) for assistance.

- Anticipated end date: Two years from the start date. (See IMPORTANT NOTE above for information on renewing the guest appointment.)
- Start date: Same as "Anticipated start date"
- End date: Same as "Anticipated end date"
- Visit Justification for guest appointment: For research using BNL resources on the Belle II experiment by accessing the data of the Belle II collaboration, an international collaboration to study heavy quark physics using the Belle II detector.

You may be contacted by the BNL Guest, User and Visitor (GUV) Center asking you to provide proof of government-issued identification (driver's license, passport, etc.).
Guest Intellectual Property Agreement (GIPA)¶
You will be contacted by the GUV Center to sign a Guest Intellectual Property Agreement (GIPA). This is required of all BNL users, both onsite and remote. If you have concerns about signing the GIPA, the following recommendation may be helpful:
- The recommendation to qualify the Guest Intellectual Property Agreement (GIPA) is to complete item 5 with the following as an “invention … conceived prior to my association with GSA”: The software framework (“basf2”) of the Belle II collaboration which includes simulation, reconstruction, analysis and core components.
- The suggested text should cover all possible work on BNL computers as a Belle II collaborator. You are, of course, free to add any additional inventions conceived prior to your association with BSA. If so, you may want to use the suggested text above as a guide or template.
- For the question "If you are under a contract with the Laboratory, please provide your contract number:", you can enter "N/A".
Training and Computer Use Agreement¶
Once you have received a guest appointment, you must complete cybersecurity training and sign the computer use agreement.
Once the above step is cleared, this step is not so time consuming (a day or two). Training is very useful and it ends with a follow-up test. You must pass the test to complete the training.
- Cybersecurity training http://training.bnl.gov/portal/GE-CYBERSEC - this must be renewed every year; you will get an email warning you your training is about to expire; sign in with your guest number and either retake the whole course (~30 min) or just pass the exam.
- Complete computer use agreement http://training.bnl.gov/portal/GE-COMPUSE-AGREE
Once your training has been registered (it may take a few hours to update the database, you can check it here https://www.bnl.gov/training/), you should receive a link to create your BNL account.
If you do not receive a response within a few days, contact the BNL Information Technology Division helpdesk itdhelp@bnl.gov or call 1.631.344.5522.
To activate your account and set your password, you will receive an email with a username, temporary password and a link where you can change your password.
2. Register for an SCDF Account¶
Once your guest appointment is approved, register for an account with the Scientific Computing & Data Facility (SCDF) following the SCDF new user instructions.
You will need to provide among other information: * Your BNL guest account information (life number) * Group: Belle II * A SSH public key. See Generate SSH Key Pairs if you don't know how to generate one. - You need to provide the key fingerprint as well.
RSA key required
SCDF gateways only accept RSA keys. Do not generate ECDSA, Ed25519, or other key types — they will be rejected.
Use a minimum key size of 4096 bits. See Generate SSH Key Pairs.
3. Test Your SCDF Account¶
Once the registration is complete, wait for the confirmation email from SCDF. You can then test your account by connecting to the SSH interactive nodes.
Contact SCDF support through RT-RACF-UserAccounts@bnl.gov if you have any issues with your account.
