SSH Interactive Nodes

Access the interactive computing nodes spoolsub01-02 via SSH for command-line work.

Prerequisites

SSH Key Required

You must have a public key registered with SDCC. If not done during registration, follow the SCDF SSH key instructions.

Connection Process

1. Start SSH Agent

Choose one of these methods:

ssh-agent /bin/bash
eval $(ssh-agent)

2. Add SSH Identity

ssh-add

This will prompt for the passphrase for .ssh/id_rsa. Ensure your public and private keys are in ${HOME}/.ssh/.

3. Connect to SSH Gateway

ssh -A USERNAME@ssh.sdcc.bnl.gov

Replace USERNAME with your SDCC account. The -A flag enables SSH agent forwarding.

4. Access Interactive Nodes

From the gateway, connect to either interactive node:

# Primary node
ssh spoolsub01.sdcc.bnl.gov

# Alternative node
ssh spoolsub02.sdcc.bnl.gov

Pro Tips

Quick Connection Alias

Set up a convenient alias for the full connection process:

alias sshBNL='ssh-add -l||ssh-add -t $((8*3600)) && ssh -A USERNAME@ssh.sdcc.bnl.gov'

This alias: - Checks if SSH keys are loaded (ssh-add -l) - Adds keys with 8-hour timeout if needed - Connects with agent forwarding

SSH Config Setup

For easier file transfers, add this to your ~/.ssh/config:

Host spoolsub01
     User USERNAME
     Hostname spoolsub01
     ForwardAgent yes
     ProxyCommand ssh USERNAME@ssh.sdcc.bnl.gov -W %h:%p

Replace USERNAME with your SDCC username. This enables direct scp and rsync operations:

scp local_file.txt spoolsub01:~/target_directory/
