Apply for computer accounts at AFs

The BNL Analysis Facility (AF) currently requires users to register for a computing account.
The registration process differs depending on whether you are currently an ATLAS collaborator or not.
If you already have an account, you may skip this section.

  • Existing ATLAS collaborators are encouraged to apply for a full SCDF account.
  • All other users should apply for a Federated Identity account.

As the AF continues to develop, the account registration process will be streamlined and unified for all users.

Brookhaven National Lab

Brookhaven National Lab has two types of accounts:

Federated Identity account Full SCDF account
JupyterHub access Yes Yes
SSH to interactive nodes No Yes
Direct HTCondor submission No Yes
Batch compute Indirectly — HTC Jupyter sessions run as HTCondor jobs Yes, directly
Typical time to obtain 1–2 business days Longer — requires Guest/Life number and training

Select FCC on the application form

For either account type, select FCC as your experiment on the application form. That is what puts you in the group_usfcc accounting group, which your batch jobs and HTC Jupyter sessions run against. There is no separate request to make afterwards.

Federated Identity Account

The Federated Identity account is quicker to obtain. Users reach BNL AF resources only through the JupyterHub instance — it does not provide SSH access to the interactive nodes or direct HTCondor submission. Note that sessions started on the HTC JupyterHub do run as HTCondor batch jobs, so you still get batch compute through Jupyter.
